Overcoming Your Sinful Nature

INTRO
Called - The flesh, Carnal mind, Body of sin, Old man, The Bible speaks about the inner battles between good and evil. (Gal. 5:16-17)
Not abnormal to get bad thoughts or fight against temptation. Not a sin, only if we succumb (Eph. 4:26-27). We can conquer only by walking in the Spirit.
I. SINFUL NATURE DEFINED (Morally depraved part of man)
Several names called:
1. Flesh (Gal. 5:19-21)
2. Carnal mind (Rom. 8:7)
3. Body of sin (Rom. 6:6)
4. Old man (Eph. 4:22)
II. HOW TO KNOW IF YOU’RE WALKING IN THE FLESH
1. Compare it to walking in the Spirit (Gal 5:19-22)
2. If you are alive on earth (Col 3:3)
3. The world likes you (Jn 15:19)
4. God seems to be working against you (Jam 4:4)
5. Grace seems to be your crutch (Rom 6:1-2,15)
6. In short: The old man is still ruling (Rom 6:6-7,12)
III. CONSEQUENCES OF WALKING IN THE FLESH
1. Will hinder spiritual growth (1 Pet 2:1-2; Psa 1:1-3)
2. Brings the wrath of God (Eph 2:3; Col 3:5-6)
3. Will eventually kill you (Rom 8:13)
IV. WHAT WE MUST DO
1. Have change of heart “REPENT” (Ezk. 18:30)
2. Yield to God (Rom. 6:12-14)
3. Rely on the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:13)
4. Slaughter it daily (1 Cor. 15:31)
5. Admit you need a Savior (Rom 7:24-25)
6. Do not make provision for the flesh (Rom 13:14)

The flesh must be slaughtered. It cannot be tamed.
